Tacoma Light Trail

Updated: Dec 30, 2023

Fire it Forward is participating in Tacoma Light Trail this year with a multi glass art media piece using fusion glass art to accent and create light reflection, lamp-worked sculptured pieces to create different themes, and various blow hot glass to compliment and provide more illuminated art. We created a Japanese style lantern piece that has three separate themed sections that are installed on top of one another to create one larger lantern.

FiF has had the opportunity to reach many different people in the last year. This includes individual artists and art enthusiasts, families, and groups that have all attended workshops and experience classes and participated in many of the local projects and events with our new community partners and supporters. We wanted to create a unique piece that represented some of the major highlights of the year and our projects. This includes three themes:

Lantern section descriptions - from top to bottom:

Butterfly Garden - this section is a collaboration of individuals and families that depicts hope, life, and new beginnings. Butterflies show the beauty and delicate nature of things and the garden of grass and flowers emphasizes life and the depth and imagery in nature, and the bright and colorful lights. Small sculpted butterflies will be suspended outside the lantern dancing around the light. This section incorporated fusion glass for garden and butterfly tiles, Lampworking for sculpted butterflies and bees, and hot glass for the stem flowers in bouquet.

Oceans and our waters (Tacoma Oceanfest 2023 participation and South Sound Surfrider Partnership Highlight) Fish tank design with small sculptures of fish, corral, shells, and other hidden treasures in theme with Oceanfest beach clean up events. This section incorporated Lampworking in boro and soft glass for the fish and smaller sculptures and the sea grass and coral were done in our hot shop.

Fire (emphasis on military and Veterans as my beginning in glass blowing with Hot Shop Heroes at the Museum of Glass over 5 years ago and is the origin of Inspiration for Fire it Forward and the connection to Fire and glass blowing) The art piece will incorporate Fire in the base of the lantern as well as displayed all around the entire lantern in smaller flamed sculptures on driftwood. This section utilized fusion glass tiles for the fire borders aroubnd the box and hot shop blown glass for the Fire bulbs.

This is not only the foundation of the art piece, but also the idea behind Fire it Forward. We will also be emphasizing this in our upcoming Find Your Fire 2024 campaign with a Find Your Fire themed glass art scavenger hunt for Tacoma Light Trail 2024.

FIND YOUR FIRE 2024 CAMPAIGN

Fire it Forward will be working on a project for 2024 to share our Fire and challenge others to do the same. We will be hosting glass art workshops, asking our team, supporters, and others to share their own personal stories of their Fire. We will also host several community driven events to share our art and ideas with the local community. Sometimes life and our own circumstances can be overwhelming and find us lost and longing for something that shines above all that and helps us connect to our life and others. Having something that can remind us that there is something brighter can have a lasting impact. Fire it Forward would like to explore and share these insights with others along with our art and community programs.

CAMPAIGN QUESTION TO REFLECT AND SHARE:

“What is your Fire? What is it that motivates you and gives you meaning and hope in your life and the world? Is it friends and family or your community? Is it your love of the arts and music? Do you find strength and guidance in your faith. Do you enjoy the outdoors and find connection with nature and it’s beauty. Maybe your drive to knowledge and learning is your motivation. For many helping others and service and having a purpose beyond their own helps them find that Fire. For some their Fire or the Light that shines in the darkness is hard to describe in words, but in order to find hope and human connection discovering that Fire or Light to guide us is key to hope and happiness. Share with us what your own personal FIRE is, we’d love to hear it! “
